Wheatley is a large village on the bus route between Oxford and Thame. In the old days, before the turnpike road was made, it was essential to change horses here, so there are several handsome, stone built former coaching inns in High Street and Crown Road. The village centre, which is a conservation area, also has shops, pubs, restaurants and a number of services. Other interesting buildings are the Manor House, the conical lock-up of 1824, the Victorian church and chapels, and the windmill on the southern horizon. Wheatley makes an excellant starting point for walks on Shotover, especially in bluebell time.
