Deep within the beech woods of the Chiltern Hills, Stoke Row is a compact village with a traditional village green forming part of the conservation area. Originally the windmill stood in the far corner next to Windmill Cottage. The village is famous for its Indian Style Maharaja's Well, which is open 24 hours a day all year through. Donated by the Maharajah of Benares (now Varanasi) in Northern India, after learning of the water shortages villages faced in the Chilterns. Built in 1864 it is hand dug, 368 feet deep and four feet wide. Accompanying the well is the private octagonal roof well keepers cottage and Cherry Orchard and playground which is open to the public. The village has two excellent public houses and accomodation.
