Long Wittenham

These two villages are only a mile or so apart, but a great loop of the Thames also connects them and there is a pleasant river walk from Dorchester which reaches Little Wittenham across Days Lock weir. Little Wittenham Nature Reserve covers an area of 250 acres including woodland and grassland as well as the famous Wittenham Clumps.

Long Wittenham, as the name implies, has most of its buildings strung out along the road that passes through it (the High Street). They include many fine thatched houses, one of which is reputed to be the oldest in South Oxfordshire (Cruck Cottage). The pretty church in the centre of the village has 12th century origins, its fine lead font dating from this time.

The Pendon Museum contains a miniature landscape model showing the countryside and transport of the 1930s and is a particular favourite of train enthusiasts.
