The origins go back to the Saxon chieftain 'Hacca'. a thriving community by the 17th Century, it was devastated by fire - but fortunately many 15th - 17th Century houses remain. In the Civil War, Cromwell's soldiers damaged the Church and stepped Cross - both then restored. The remains of two other crosses are at Coscote and by the War Memorial. The Church originates from the 10th Century, boasting an early Sanctus bell-cote, sanctuary knocker and a fine peel of bells. One oast house survives, and also the site where blotting paper was invented. East Hagbourne remains a thriving village with Church, Community Shop, Post-Office and School.
