The name Chiselhampton is derived from 'hampton' meaning high enclosure and 'cisel' meaning grave. Chiselhampton is on the north side of a fine Tudor bridge over the River Thames, where in 1643 Prince Rupert rode to victory at the Battle of Chalgrove. Towards Oxford there is an unusual white Georgian Church built in 1762 and Chiselhampton House, an elegant brick manor house built in 1768 by Sir Charles Peers, a former Lord Mayor of London.
